Dear friends of the DP Jazz Choir:

Happy belated New Year to everyone! It was good to see so many of you
over the holidays
you all may have graduated, but ‘the family’ still
remains, doesn’t it?

I wanted to give you a little update on all the things that happened to
the choir in ’06 and bring up to speed with what’s happened so far this
year

Our school year started with a sponsorship from Sotheby’s to participate
in a Sandcastle Contest. Having never done something like this we had no
idea what we were going to do, much less HOW we were going to do it;
but, with a few days of brain storming and some rakes, shovels and
strong backs, we created a HUGE bass fiddle and a giant note and placed
2nd in the Adult Division. (The team that beat us made the statues from
Easter Island – how does one compete that for goodness sake?) Our FIRST
RIBBON as the NEW CHOIR – we were so proud! :-)

>From there, we participated in the Lemon Festival. This was the first
time the DP Jazz Choir ever performed there and they loved us. In fact,
I met a woman Friday evening who told me she hopes to make them one of
the featured entertainers at next year’s festival (that means they’ll
have a lot of work to do to be ready so early in the school year!!)

The choir sang the National Anthem at “Back to School Night” and several
home football games and even did a Rotary Club gig!

The choir sang at the Westmont Choral Festival – this was a first, too,
as it was NO JAZZ! Michael Shasberger, who serves as the Adams Chair of
Music and Worship at Westmont, and who was one of the adjudicators,
commented to the listening audience how they should ‘appreciate the
level of music DP was singing’
it’s hard to register the size of a
smile, but suffice it to say, our kids felt pretty darn good about
themselves that day!

The choir sang at the Cuesta Jazz Festival where the adjudicator there
told Dylan Marrow Jones his ‘vibes ROCKED’
and the choir ‘had it all
going on
’

The choir was seen on the Musical Café (Channel 17) thanks to Dr. Hal
Kopeikin.

The choir won “Best Performing Artist” in the Holiday Parade as they
rode in a Santa Barbara Trolley decorated as a ‘Magical Music Box’, with
a REAL spinning key on top! (these kids are amazing
!)

The choir did 9 gigs over all – 2 holiday concerts, a car wash, a
raffle, and multiple fundraisers
!

2006 – It was a VERY GOOD YEAR!!

AS we begin 2007, we have been informed the choir will perform twice at
the Montreux Jazz Festival on the Parc Vernex Stage, the Champs de Mars
Garden in Paris and the Luxembourg Gardens (behind the French State
Building). We’re waiting to hear about some of the other venues we
auditioned for – I’ll let you know about those as things develop!

Friday the choir had a visit from “The Bobs”, a contemporary, award
winning, a cappella group who ‘wowed’ them with their vocal percussion
and ‘unique’ songs. They gave a short master class and then headed off
to LA but promised to come back again to spend more time with them!

Wednesday, the choir will travel to UCSB’s Geringer Hall to take part in
Bobby McFerrin’s master class and something else (that sadly escapes me
at the moment).

February will be the choir’s talent show
if you’re around, I hope you’ll
come and support the kids. It’s not always the best show, but it IS fun,
right?

Our fundraising efforts for our Europe trip continue, so I hope that you
will continue to tell your friends about the DP Jazz Choir. Our benefit
concert is June 2nd
save the date
headliner guests will be announced in
the next couple of weeks so stay tuned! It’s going to be FUN!

We also have our contests coming up
so, we’re working hard
!!

Anyway
that’s the update on what’s happening with the DP Jazz Choir. As
our Europe tour continues to shape up, I’ll fill you in on the
details
we’ve added Paris this year to the itinerary, as I mentioned
earlier, which should be exciting
! So
stay tuned!

Thanks for your support!
